16-year-old accused of beating Kozmo to death during Mesquite K-9 police raid

A Mesquite police dog killed during a chase on suspicion of early Monday robbery has been beaten to death, according to dog necropsies.

Mesquite police said Thursday that a necropsy said Cosmo had died from an injury that was consistent with the attack.

A 16-year-old robbery suspect who was taken prisoner on Monday has been charged with the murder of Koshto.

The juvenile was charged with interfering with a police service animal (causing injury or death), which is a second-degree crime.

The three suspects in the robbery, one adult and two minors, were detained on Monday.

Monday morning 02. Shortly after 30 a.m., Mesquite police responded to a request from Balch Springs police to assist in the pursuit of several serious robbery suspects.

During the pursuit, officers used earplugs և disabling suspects’ vehicles in Burton Road 35 635 Interstate. The suspects collided with a wooded area near the highway.

Mesquite K-9 Kozmo responded to the scene to pursue the suspects. The suspects were found, but Cosmo did not return.

Monday morning 4 p.m. Cosmo’s body was found around 13 p.m.

“Cosmo was an amazing, loyal dog who gave his life in the line of duty,” Mesquite police said in a news release on Monday. “We ask everyone to keep all our officers in their thoughts and prayers when dealing with this loss.”

A memorial service for Kozmo is expected.
