Chinese companies are discussing vaccine promotion, strengthening staff

TAIPEI, TAIWAN (AP) – Chinese vaccine manufacturers are studying their cavity mixture և can a booster blow help better protect against COVID-19?

Sinovac և Sinopharm, two Chinese manufacturers that have jointly exported hundreds of millions of doses worldwide, say they are considering combining their vaccines with other companies’ vaccines.

Earlier this month, Gao Fu, director of the China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that vaccines currently offer low protection against coronavirus, and that their combination is part of a strategy to increase their effectiveness.

Gao later tried to retract his comment, saying that in general he was talking about improving the effectiveness of vaccines.

China’s National Biotechnology Group has a plan for further “sequential use” of its vaccines, Lee Meng, the company’s head of international cooperation, told an international conference on Wednesday.

The company, a subsidiary of state-owned Sinopharm, has developed two inactive COVID-19 vaccines and a third in clinical trials.

Sinovak, a private company based in Beijing, said they were in preliminary discussions with investigators, including the China Centers for Disease Control, about combining doses of their CoronaVac vaccine.

Regular immunization means mixing different vaccines և it’s a strategy that can increase the level of effectiveness, says Ashley St. John On, an immunologist at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore.

“They are trying to change the schedule to really find the best place to give people the vaccines,” he said. John “What is the best combination of time?”

Sinopharm vaccines from the Beijing Institute of Biological Products և Wuhan Institute of Biological Products are 79% և 72% effective, respectively. It did not disclose more details about the latest phase of its clinical trials.

The practice is observed in other countries as well. British scientists study the composition of AstraZeneca և Pfizer shots. The study also aims to test different intervals between doses, four weeks և 12 weeks apart.

The results of such investigations could have repercussions on public health around the world, as governments around the world face logistical barriers to receiving vaccines on time and distributing staff.

Researchers in Brazil, who conducted clinical trials of Sinovac in the country, released new data this month that reaffirmed the company’s previously announced 50% efficiency level. The paper, which has not yet been reviewed by peers but published on the scientists’ website, has shown that the Sinovac vaccine is 50.7% more effective against COVID-19 symptomatic cases and much stronger against serious diseases.

CanSino, another Chinese company that developed the adenovirus vector vaccine, said it was studying the effects of its own vaccine booster six months after the first dose. The staff, which uses the same technology as AstraZeneca, is 65.3% efficient.
