Police say a man with a suspended license is blamed for the crash that killed the teenager.

Frederick Bailey was driving with a suspended license earlier this year when an 18-year-old boy collided with a bicycle and got out, Miami-Dade police said.

The young man, Derek Betancour, did not survive.

Police arrested Bailey, 45, on Monday, accusing him of fleeing the scene of a fatal crash, driving with a suspended license, and falsifying evidence.

He was detained Monday night at the Miami-Dade Turner Guildford Knight Correctional Facility on a $ 16,500 bond.

Betancourt was riding his bicycle just before 8pm on February 9, 19600 on Northwest 47th Avenue. In the area of the district, when he was run over.

Immediately after the accident, the police reported that Betancourt was hit by a dark four-door Mercedes Benz C300 from 2015 to 2018. Detectives said the car had damage to the front, including the missing front grille and the missing Mercedes logo.

According to the report on Bailey’s arrest, the police found the damaged Mercedes on February 13 in the West Park car park. The driver of the tow truck told police that Bailey had been asked to cover the tow truck.

After obtaining permission to search the car, police said they were able to find “DNA evidence” that matched Bailey. Police did not provide evidence. Cell phone records also landed Bailey at the scene, police said.

For the past 15 years, Bailey has paid $ 1,656 in transportation fines, still owing Miami-Dade’s $ 878 in traffic quotes, records show.

His license has been suspended several times over the years for failing to pay fines for violations involving overdue registration, performing 62 mph in the 40 mph zone.

On October 9, 2010, Miami Garden staff distributed 11 tickets to Bailey after the incident. He was eventually convicted of DUI but paid a hefty fine of $ 1,197.25 per charge.

Driving without a license was one of the four tickets Bailey received after the April 2019 incident in Miami Gardens.
