When efforts to oust Governor Gavin Newsom go to the polls, the key question is who will be elected to replace him. Here is a look at how that part of the election will go.

If Newsom is successfully recalled, what is the replacement process?

Voters will be asked two questions on the ballot paper after the election is called to be called off. The first is whether they want to get rid of Newsom. The second is that if Newsom is recalled, no matter how the first question was voted, who do they want to replace?

If more than 50% of voters support the removal of Newsom, the main voter in the second question automatically becomes the governor, no matter how many votes that person receives.

What are the qualifications to be nominated?

Candidates must submit the nominated documents 59 days before the election. Election day is not yet clear, but it is expected to take place in late autumn, possibly in November.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens who are registered or eligible to vote upon receipt of nomination documents. They can not be convicted of offering, giving or taking bribes, embezzling state money, treason or related crimes. They can not run if they have been governor for two terms since November 6, 1990 (so no, Jerry Brown cannot run again). According to the Secretary of State’s office, they must also pay $ 3,916.12 in lawsuit or submit at least 7,000 valid signatures.

The target of the recall, Newsom, is banned from appearing in the ballot box replacement section.

Who is running?

So far, four prominent Republicans have announced that they are campaigning to replace Newsom.

  • Former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulkner. The 54-year-old was a member of the San Diego City Council from 2006 to 2014, as mayor from 2014 to 2020. The fiscal conservative-social liberal often preached his ability to be elected in a democratic city. San Diego was the largest city with a mayor during his tenure. He is closely associated with key Republicans such as Bakersfield House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, which may give him access to a number of wealthy GOP donors.

  • Businessman John on Cox. The 65-year-old multimillionaire had his fortune in real estate, investments and property management. He used his ability to finance several unsuccessful running positions. Congress 2000, Senate 2002, Cook County (hospital) 2004 Recorder of cases, US President 2008 And the governor of California in 2018. In that last race, he spent $ 5.7 million of his own money on the Race, a historic loss to Newsom.

A resident of Rancho Santa Fe also failed to push for quasi-voting measures, such as enlarging the legislature and requiring lawmakers to wear the logos of their top 10 donors on the floor of the Capitol as NASCAR drivers display their sponsors’ badges.

  • Caitlin en enner. The Olympic Hall of Fame, the real-life TV star, announced on Friday that it was running, a move that immediately compares to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s successful run in 2003. Reminds me that the overthrow was made by Governor Gray Dice, although the incumbent star was more involved in California politics before being elected governor than the reality star does. Transgender women have described themselves as lifelong economic conservatives and social liberals. The 71-year-old woman flirted with running against Senator Diane Feinstein in 2018, but did not.

  • Former Rep. Doug Ose. The multimillionaire made his fortune in real estate, representing the Sacramento suburbs in Congress from 1999 to 2005. While in office, Oss supported the efforts of President George W. Bush to make tax cuts permanent and to stop the automatic increase in members’ salaries. Congress He promised to serve three terms, but then unsuccessfully ran for Congress again in 2008-2014. Osset also ran for governor for a short time in 2018. The 65-year-old woman lives in Sacramento.

There are also other lesser-known ones, such as:

  • Sam Galucci. The 60-year-old Republican began his career in technology, eventually becoming CEO and CEO of PeopleSoft. The company was acquired by Oracle for $ 10.3 billion in 2004. Gallucci then turned his attention to nonprofit, hard work, and became the senior pastor of Embrace. Church in Oxnard. She has also made efforts to help women և children և at risk և migrant workers.

  • Rick Grenell. Grenell served as the Republican Republican Party’s most prominent gay man as acting director of national intelligence for President Trump and ambassador to Germany from 2020 to 2020. Grenell, now 54, previously served in the George W. Bush administration. GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. It was unclear whether he was fired from his recent role on social media for degrading reporting or gospel misfortune with a gay man who served in a prominent role.

And here, there are repeat advertisements from 2003 reminders.

  • Billboard model Angelina և Retired adult film actress Mary Kerry have both announced their candidacy. Expect more. The 2003 recall campaign involved more than 130 candidates, including politicians, publishers, and pornographers.

Are there any well-known Democrats nominated?

Not yet. Newsom’s allies want to present a united democratic front that allows them to describe the recall as a seizure of power by the GOP to carry out through special elections what they cannot, through ordinary propaganda. It also avoids the 2003 recall, when DG allies allege that Lieutenant Colonel Cruz Bustamante’s decision to run as an insurer if the recall was successful brought votes to the governor.

Some strategists argue that having a well-known Democrat on the ballot is necessary if Newsom is to be recalled. It is reported that some potential candidates are watching the race, in particular the former mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa և The founder of the billionaire hedge fund became a clean energy fighter Tom Steyer. The decision to run could turn them into a democratic pariah if they fail, or the savior of their party if Newsom recalls them.
